For the current financial year, which ends on 30 October 2022, NSW has published details on their Visa Nomination programme and revisions to the occupation listings. The Federal Government has allotted several slots that each state may propose for Skilled Migration through the Skilled Visa Nomination Program. Several changes are surrounding the 190 and 491 visas that you need to be aware of, and that we shall describe here. The plan is to nominate individuals for the Subclass 190 State/Territory Nominated Permanent Skilled Visa and the Subclass 491 Provisional Regional Skilled Visa, which are both General Skilled Migration visas. This article elaborates on Provisional Regional Skilled Visa (Subclass 491).
NSW Occupation Lists and requirements – 2021 and 2022
Many popular professions have remained on the list in certain areas, while many more have been added; The Subclass 491 Provisional Regional Skilled Visa, like its permanent equivalent, is now “by invitation only.” This implies that instead of enabling prospective candidates to submit their applications for consideration, NSW will now choose candidates before allowing them to apply for State Nomination. As a result, you won’t be able to file for State Nomination until NSW selects you. Only during a “submission window” will you be needed to register your interest.
This fiscal year, these windows will only be open in August, October, January, and March. NSW has been allotted 3,640 seats for the 491 visa for the whole fiscal year, therefore applicants will be carefully chosen, with preference given to individuals who currently live and work or study in an NSW regional area.
There are now 3 Streams under which you could fit:
Stream 1 – This one is for Regional NSW people. If you live or work in Regional NSW for a year before the registration of interest. This excludes the Sydney Metropolitan area.
Stream 2 – International Students with 2 years as a student in Regional NSW. The candidates are assessed as closely related to the nomination occupation.
Stream 3 – For those who reside in NSW but not in rural NSW and have a job in that state’s applicable list is eligible. While this programme may be available outside of Australia, to be eligible you must be in Sydney or another Australian state.
Please understand that each stream has a different occupation list so you must pay close attention to check if you cut. Some other important points to note,
- The candidate must be below 45 years.
- Candidate must possess positive skills assessment
- The candidate must score at least 65 points on the point test.
